**LISTENING:** *to lily allen's incredible new album*
**FEELING:** *so tired from an already busy week*
**SEEING:** *my sleepy cat on the couch*

I just got home from talking to a group of journalism students about mental health and weaving your emotions into your journalism. I love talking to early-career folks about taking care of ourselves — and I also love learning from them.

One student, Sid, approached me at the end of class and shared that he recently read that coal use was on the rise. I hadn't seen this news, but I immediately looked it up when I came home.

The New York Times [reported](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/13/climate/us-emissions-2025-coal-power.html?ref=possibilities.news) earlier this week that, for the first time in two years, U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are up.

And coal is to blame.

Welcome to **Possibilities**, a creative climate newsletter on the possibilities that lie where crisis meets community. I’m **Yessenia Funes**, and we're getting newsy today.

Preliminary data from research firm Rhodium Group [suggests](https://rhg.com/research/us-greenhouse-gas-emissions-2025/?ref=possibilities.news) planet-polluting emissions were up 2.4 percent in 2025\. Fossil fuels played a big part, which is alarming because scientists have been clear that countries need to shift away from oil, gas, and coal to prevent further planetary warming.

Unfortunately, President Donald Trump isn't interested in science.

Coal is a particularly dirty source of energy. It's dirty to extract, mine, transport, and refine. It's dirty to burn for energy. It's real nasty stuff.

I've written lots about [coal's toxic byproducts](https://gizmodo.com/giant-pile-of-toxic-coal-ash-is-being-moved-from-puerto-1834750231?ref=possibilities.news) that can contaminate local water sources and air. I've written about the [coal miners who die](https://gizmodo.com/more-coal-miners-are-dying-from-black-lung-and-these-r-1834898618?ref=possibilities.news) from black lung, a respiratory disease associated with breathing in the dust from coal sites. Despite these risks, coal electricity generation increased 13 percent in 2025\.

This comes after a Trump White House [executive order](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/04/reinvigorating-americas-beautiful-clean-coal-industry-and-amending-executive-order-14241/?ref=possibilities.news) in April pushing for local coal production. There, the administration describes coal as "cost effective." The federal government is committing to its lies; it's now ignoring the cost of illnesses, health disparities, and death in air pollution regulations. And all [to lower the costs](https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2026/01/12/epa-public-health-pollution-costs/?ref=possibilities.news) for polluters.

As Emily Atkin wrote for her newsletter, [HEATED](https://heated.world/p/air-pollution-denial-is-now-epa-policy?ref=possibilities.news):

> Did you know? Air pollution regulations actually do more harm than good [if you ignore all the lives they save](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/12/climate/trump-epa-air-pollution.html?ref=possibilities.news).
>
> That sentence sounds deranged because it is. But it’s also the honest-to-God logic behind the Trump administration’s new approach to regulating air pollution, [which kills more Americans every year than car accidents](https://qz.com/135509/more-americans-die-from-car-pollution-than-car-accidents?ref=possibilities.news).

Pollution affects so many parts of our bodies. Depending on what people are exposed to, they can [suffer](https://www.who.int/teams/environment-climate-change-and-health/air-quality-energy-and-health/health-impacts?ref=possibilities.news) respiratory issues, heart problems, neurological impacts, and cancer. Regulations should consider these costs. These health burdens are ultimately passed onto taxpayers. Plus, keeping people healthy [costs less](https://www.cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2019/18%5F0625.htm?ref=possibilities.news) than treating them after they're sick.

For a second, though, let's ignore the money. Fuck the economic benefits. Governments are supposed to protect their constituents from disease and exploitation. We pay the salaries of elected officials and vote them into office to keep us safe. That is their one job: to serve us.

Axios [reports](https://www.axios.com/2026/01/14/trump-epa-pollution-legal?ref=possibilities.news) that some environmental groups are preparing a lawsuit against the Trump administration's latest move. I can't imagine the families who live next door to polluters will be silent, either. I'll have to find out soon. 🌀

## Rest in Power

**While we can't say for certain that climate change led to these specific weather events (we need attribution studies for that), we do know that the Earth's rising temperatures are already creating more frequent and/or stronger disasters like these.**

A winter storm [struck](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/1/13/eight-dead-in-gaza-as-storm-brings-extreme-cold-collapses-buildings?ref=possibilities.news) Gaza Tuesday, killing at least five Palestinians. When will the people of Palestine finally have peace?

Mozambique entered the new year with devastating rains and floods I had missed before. At least [21 people](https://reliefweb.int/report/mozambique/mozambique-flash-update-no2-flooding-zambezia-sofala-tete-provinces-8-january-2026-enpt?ref=possibilities.news) have died. There's been an ongoing flood risk for the past few weeks.

A dramatic and deadly cold snap hit Europe last week, [leaving at least six dead](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/europe-cold-weather-deaths-arctic-forecast-b2896653.html?ref=possibilities.news), largely from car accidents involving black ice.

## Currently Reading

Lex McMenamin has hit the ground running in their new gig at the Guardian. [Read about a U.S. protester arrested on live news](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/08/venezuela-protester-arrested?ref=possibilities.news).

I can't stop thinking about Renee Nicole Good, and poet Danez Smith wrote [for Harper's Bazaar](https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/features/a69957102/elegy-for-renee-nicole-good/?ref=possibilities.news) what I needed to read: "Maybe, like a good ally, you thought your whiteness would protect you, that your citizenship might protect you. Maybe that is why you showed up for our brown, Black, immigrant neighbors. But you were also a woman, you were queer, you were intelligent and brave and caring for those around you. Oh, the many ways the country sought to end you, control you, kill you spiritually, mentally, and, finally, physically."

I appreciated these [thoughts on Good](https://matrixial.substack.com/p/zozobra) through an undocumented lens by a writer who only goes by Christían.

On the dirty energy front, the oil and gas industry is ramping up to fight climate lawsuits. Emily Sanders has the story [for ExxonKnews](https://www.exxonknews.org/p/big-oil-declares-war-on-climate-lawsuits?ref=possibilities.news).

**BRIDE TO BE**
coming together
to celebrate a sweet love
a real-life rom-com

a party, a dance
kisses and hugs, true romance
oh, yes — this is love
