**LISTENING:** *to the groan of some truck outside*
**FEELING:** *scared*
**SEEING:** *the leaves fall from my balcony*

I don't know where to start. I spent hours in bed scrolling this morning. When I eventually snapped out of it, I walked and walked. I removed Instagram from my phone. I ate an acai bowl and read Rebecca Solnit. I walked some more and stood with trees. I smoked some weed and felt myself drift. I listened to my heartbeat. I tried to shut out my thoughts. I kicked fallen leaves. I rolled my eyes at a pickup truck donning an American flag.

I spiraled: "How do I hold onto my empathy? How do I remain open? How do I stop my rage from consuming me?"

Want to help me pay photographers and writers to contribute to the newsletter? I've created an Artist Fund for anyone who wants to donate outside their regular subscriptions. Once I reach $100, I'll be able to license my first image from a photographer. Donate [here](https://buy.stripe.com/5kAbMJahWdQU3K0dQQ?ref=possibilities.news). Donald Trump will be president again. I covered his last presidency. I wrote about his ridiculous [border wall](https://gizmodo.com/if-trump-wants-his-racist-border-wall-hell-have-to-sta-1841383594?ref=possibilities.news) and the ways climate change was complicating its construction. I wrote about his [appointment](https://gizmodo.com/trump-administration-hires-a-trophy-hunting-advocate-to-1842429159?ref=possibilities.news) of Anna Seidman, an advocate who believes in killing animals for sport, to the Fish and Wildlife Service. I wrote about his [15-minute visit](https://gizmodo.com/trump-endures-nearly-15-whole-minutes-of-un-climate-sum-1838363838?ref=possibilities.news) to a U.N. climate summit in 2019\. I covered the [rise of air pollution](https://gizmodo.com/air-pollution-is-increasing-for-the-first-time-in-a-dec-1839257516?ref=possibilities.news) under his presidency. Remember his [attempt](https://gizmodo.com/trump-s-unprecedented-plan-to-restart-the-keystone-xl-1833723790?ref=possibilities.news) to revive the Keystone XL pipeline? Or the attempted assassination of the [Paris Climate Accord](https://gizmodo.com/bye-bye-paris-agreement-1839617211?ref=possibilities.news)? Or, hello, the [COVID-19 pandemic](https://gizmodo.com/the-coronavirus-is-forcing-the-climate-movement-to-reim-1842597376?ref=possibilities.news) that killed over [350,000](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/podcasts/2022/20220107/20220107.htm?ref=possibilities.news) under his watch in 2020?

Welcome to **Possibilities**, a creative climate newsletter on the possibilities that lie where crisis meets community. I’m **Yessenia Funes**, and the day is heavy.

Donald Trump will be president again. We will have yet another four years of environmental deregulation, billionaire handouts, and xenophobic rhetoric. We will cry. We will shout. The police will arrest us. The 47th president's supporters will try to attack us. Will the people fight back? Is nonviolent resistance the answer? Will my words be enough?

I don't know, and I've got no crystal ball. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe things won't be so bad. But Trump has been very clear about who he is, what he stands for, and what he plans to do once in office. Is it not foolish to believe he'll do something different?

So what do we do? Well, I will write and report. I'm thinking I should plug into New York's mutual aid networks. I've got so much privilege. I've got a car. I'm able-bodied. I have free weekends and get to dictate my own schedule. I'll keep doing my journalism, but I no longer feel that my journalism is enough.

## Tip Jar

If you love Possibilities, why not spare a few bucks?

For now, however, I will keep talking to people whose lives continue to be shaped by a planet that's too damn hot. I'm in New York City today where the temperatures will reach nearly 80 degrees Fahrenheit. IN NOVEMBER. I'm on my balcony in a tank top and shorts.

I don't have any solutions or wise words to share from my trusted sources today. No journalistic intuition. I just have this unshakable, disturbed feeling. None of this is normal. We're approaching dangerous days ahead. The City of New York is under a [drought watch](https://www.thecity.nyc/2024/11/04/drought-watch-new-york-city/?ref=possibilities.news). Hurricane Rafael is [making landfall](https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/06/weather/hurricane-rafael-path-forecast-climate/index.html?ref=possibilities.news) in Cuba as a Category 3 storm as I write. Floods are [killing](https://apnews.com/article/flash-floods-spain-valencia-climate-change-what-to-know-f942142b82de24f5b4a18867bc32ae00?ref=possibilities.news) hundreds in Spain. California is [on fire](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/06/us/malibu-fire-power-outages-california.html?ref=possibilities.news).

I do know this much: We're at the beginning of a new chapter in American history. We still have the power to write a story we'll be proud of: tales of resistance, boycotts, unity, feminism, and new forces born from the ashes of burnt books. But will our nation seize that power? Or will we go silent and lose our voices to the storm-brazen wind? 🌀

I'm also giving y'all a first look into my attempt to write my children's book. I [wrote](https://www.possibilities.news/a-year-of-possibilities/) about this a few weeks ago, but here is the [landing pag](https://www.possibilities.news/childrens-book/)e where I'm keeping track of all the editions where you can find what I've shared so far.

## Rest in Power

**While we can't say for certain that climate change led to these specific weather events (we need attribution studies for that), we do know that the Earth's rising temperatures are already creating more disasters like these.**

The floods in Spain have [killed](https://apnews.com/article/flash-floods-spain-valencia-climate-change-what-to-know-f942142b82de24f5b4a18867bc32ae00?ref=possibilities.news) more than 200 people.

## Currently Reading

I'm gonna work on imagining the future I want after reading this [piece](https://wagingnonviolence.org/2024/11/10-things-to-do-if-trump-wins/?ref=possibilities.news) by Daniel Hunter on 10 ways to prepare for a Trump presidency. Protests won't be enough anymore.

I might have to go get some survival training after getting through this [New Yorker story](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/11/11/among-the-civil-war-preppers?ref=possibilities.news) by Charles Bethea. I plan to survive if a Civil War breaks out.

On a more hopeful note, let's not lose sight of the [progress](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/29/business/germany-solar-panels-climate-change.html?ref=possibilities.news) with clean energy happening across the globe. Or in the U.S., [thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act](https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/interactive/2024/climate-bill-biden-clean-energy/?ref=possibilities.news).

## Poetry

the trees can sing
even when the leaves fall
they don't know who's in charge
or who is cutting to chop them down
they can't see our tears or hear the saws
but they can sip from the salted water
as our eyes rupture, feeding the hills
